 Insight Into Blue Springs

Your Personal Leadership Connection

Welcome,
Mayor Steve SteinerI want to welcome you to another informational edition of the Insight Newsletter. As your mayor, it is my goal to provide you with the most up-to date, relevant information that is most important to you, giving you a better insight into what positive things the City is doing.

In this issue we'll look primarily at the exciting events and exceptional citizens making Blue Springs' community news. Another new business establishing roots in our city, the international recognition of a local Fire Chief, and of course, the much anticipated annual Fall Festival are just a few of the wonderful things taking place in our community. We are truly a city on the move, and we need you, Blue Springs, to help continue this positive drive toward progress and improvement!

Community Highlights
Don't forget the Fall Fun Fest! -  The 37th annual Blue Springs Fall Fun Fest kicks off today at Noon and runs through September 16th at 6:00 p.m. As always, the Chamber of Commerce sponsored festival takes place downtown and truly has something for everyone from a petting zoo and performance stage to a nine-ball open pool tournament. This year, the entertainment headliner will be Johnny Lee and the Urban Cowboys, sponsored by country music station KFKF.
The festival will also include one of our citizen's favorite attractions, the Blue Springs Chamber of Commerce Fall Festival Parade which takes place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 15th. The parade will begin at 15th and Vesper and travel south to Main street. Be sure to bring the entire family for a time of fun, food and festivities. Remember to be safe during this festival weekend and I'll see you at the parade!

BBQ Blaze Off was a Blast -  Thanks to everyone who attended and participated in the 24th Annual Blue Springs Barbeque Blaze off last weekend. Crowds were plentiful, weather was pleasantly warm and the food of course, was the highlight of the event. I want to extend my personal thanks to the many volunteers who worked to direct parking, act as event attendants and clean up crews for putting on another seamless Barbeque Blaze Off. "Congratulations" are also in order to barbeque contest winners:

·         Grand Champion - Smoke on the Water

·         Reserve Grand - Big Creek BBQ

Nunsense: The Mega-Musical -
The Blue Springs City Theatre's production of "Nunsense" will begin this weekend at the Civic Center located on the campus of Blue Springs High NunsenseSchool.  I am pleased to announce that my pet parrot, Toby, and myself will be quest performers during Act Two of the show and perform 10 minutes of magic.  The show runs September 13, 14, 15, 16, 20, 21, 22 & 23 with show times at 7:30 PM on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2:00 PM on Sunday.  Tickets are available at the door.

Blue Springs High School Football Battle-
If you're a resident of Blue Springs, you know this weekend marks one of the biggest rivalry high school football games in the city. On Saturday, September 15th the Wildcats of Blue Springs High School will host the Jaguars of Blue Springs South High School at Peve Stadium.  The game will be featured live on radio station 1030 AM KCWJ with the ReMax Heartland Game Night at 6:00 p.m., Blue Springs Economic Development Council Pre-Game Show at 6:30 p.m. and kick-off at 7:00 p.m.  Don't forget to root your team on to victory!

Momentum at the Mall at Fall Creek

Culver's is Coming, Culver's is Coming! -
Residents driving South on Highway 7 may soon find themselves tempted by the mouthwatering smells of homemade Culvur'shamburgers and fresh fries, and the thought of flavorful frozen custards. Building its new home on the northwest corner of Highway 7 and Victor Drive, the new Culver's restaurant is scheduled for completion in the late Fall of this year. Culver's is most commonly known for its signature ButterBurger®, chicken and fish dinners and fresh frozen custard  deserts. I'm glad to see yet another high-end restaurant favorite make its home in our City!

Council Approves Additional Provisions for Mirror Image Car Wash - On September 5, the City Council approved additional provisions for the development of the future Mirror Image Express Car wash to be built on the corner of southwest Clark Drive and South 7 Highway. The provisions passed will allow developers to build the upscale, drive-through car wash on approximately one acre of land located in the Mall at Fall Creek.

The locally owned car wash, which is operated out of Independence on 40 Highway, offers a range of services ranging from the Express Signature Wash to the Mirror Image Full detail. I believe that both of these new businesses will provide additional traffic to the center, and promote a healthy retail climate for the center.

Horizon Automotive, Open For Business - This past Wednesday, Councilman Quibell, along with members of city staff and the Chamber of Commerce attended a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Horizon Automotive located at 609 S. 7 Highway, just north of 40 Highway. I would like to extend a warm Blue Springs welcome to the owners of Horizon Automotive, and wish them much success in doing business in our community.

Chief Steven WestermannCongratulations Chief Steven Westermann!  -  It is my privilege to congratulate Chief Steven Westermann of the Central Jackson County Fire Protection District (CJCFPD) on his recent installation as President to the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC). As president, Chief Westermann will provide leadership to a 20-member board for the association located in Fairfax, Virginia and will serve as the primary spokesperson for the association on matters of national and international interest. Chief Westermann has served as Chief of Department to the CJCFPD for over 20 years. On behalf of the entire city, we commend you Chief Westermann on this tremendous honor and your many accomplishments.

Local Athletes Earn National Titles  -  It's amazing to think about how much youth talent resides within our City. In the last issue of Insight, we spotlighted Blue Springs athletes Tiffany Davenport and Ivana Hong, who have excelled tremendously in local and national athletics. This week, I would like to recognize a talented team of athletes from the Acro Explosion and Acro Gymnastics teams of Ronda's Total Technique in Dance in Blue Springs - Allison Mock of Blue Springs, Megan Muehlberger of Blue Springs and Mia Medina of Lee's Summit who earned a place on the Junior Olympic National Team.

Mia Median and Brooke Mummaw of Blue Springs also earned a spot on the national teams as a competitive pair. And it's often said, where there are good athletes to be found, there are also good leaders and coaches. Ronda Frances, owner of Ronda's Total Technique in Dance was also named the elite Coach of the Year for acro gymnastics. Congratulations Ronda and acro gymnasts for your wonderful accomplishments, and thank you for representing our city so well.

September is National Preparedness Month  National Preparedness Month is a nationwide effort held each September and is designed to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies and engaging citizens in pre-event preparedness activities. All Americans, including the citizens of Blue Springs should act now to take some simple steps to prepare for emergencies. Emergencies can happen any time, and it is these small steps that help save lives.

Through our Communications Department the City of Blue Springs, as am I, are encouraging families to begin practicing 3 basic steps this month to get better prepared:

  • Get a Kit
  • Make A Plan
  • Be Informed and Get Involved

Visit www.ready.gov for more information on National Preparedness Month.
