 Insight Into Blue Springs

Your Personal Leadership Connection

Welcome,

streetBack-to-school time is here again! The month of August means many things to many people. For some, it is the time to purchase school supplies - new clothes, backpacks, pens and textbooks. For others, it's a sign that the weather will soon start changing and the city around us will look more colorful and more festive every day. For the City of Blue Springs, the month of August means we're moving closer to some very important activities and events including the close of the Red, White and Blue Springs for Art temporary public art display, significant improvements in the downtown district and along 7 Highway, and the final festivities of summer including the Music in the Park Concert Series and summer Street Flicks. All of these things are signs of growth and progress, and we thank you Blue Springs for sharing it with us.

Local Restaurant Receives Regional Honor -
On Monday, June 25th, District 1 Councilman, Lyle Shaver, and myself attended a special recognition ceremony for the Bob Evans Restaurant on 7 Highway along the North Outer Road. This year Bob Evans Restaurants named its Blue Springs restaurant one of its six "Restaurants of the Year".  General Manager Gary Anderson is equally pleased about the award saying, the Blue Springs location at 1117 N. Missouri 7 was honored based on "sales, customer service, employee turnover and safety." Congratulations to the staff of Bob Evans in their recognition of such quality work in our community.

Missouri Elks Visit Blue Springs - Last weekend, Councilman Joe Stubblefield participated in the opening ceremony for the 39th Annual Missouri Elks Golf Association State tournament held at Adams Point Golf Club and the Country Club of Blue Springs on August 4th and 5th

The tournament, which welcomed 556 golfers and approximately 300 spectators and tournament supporters to Blue Springs, was created to benefit charities associated with the Elks. Some of these charities include the Elks Mobile Dental Services (locally affiliated with area hospitals and clinics), annual college scholarships and to fund various drug awareness and patriotism programs. The Elks plan to return again to Blue Springs next year for the same event!  Councilman Stubblefield commented that the Elks' are looking forward to shopping and dining at the new retail center of Coronado Place in 2008!

New Coffeehouse Opens on South Side -

Ribbon Cutting at Scooter's

This past Monday, Councilman Jeff Quibell and I had the opportunity to join members of the Chamber of Commerce in a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Scooter's Coffee House located in front of the Price Chopper on South 7 Highway.  I join with all the coffee drinkers on the south side of town in welcoming them to our city!

New Village GardensOut with the Old!
The developments along 7 Highway just continue to flourish. And no one knows that better than Village Gardens owners Tom, TJ and Dana Nigro.  The Village Gardens, located at 7 Highway and Mock Avenue boasts a clear view from Highway 7 to its new building, as the old Village Gardens, formerly a remodeled gasoline station has been torn down.  Nothing to report as of yet, but future development plans for the vacant lot include a sit-down family style restaurant.

Downtown Improvements on their Way! -This past Monday, the City Council approved the plan for Community Development Block Grant Funding for 2008.  The plan includes street and lighting improvements in our downtown area and now only awaits final approval from the Department of Housing and Urban Development.  Look for the downtown improvements to begin very shortly.

News in the City
Blue Springs PolicePraise to our Police Department! - This past week, our police officers were involved in saving at least two lives!  In the much-publicized kidnapping event at a local motel, they prevented, what appeared to be a possible murder from taking place.  They also helped save the life of an apparent suicide victim by tracking down and transporting the individual to St. Mary's Hospital just in the nick of time.  All of us offer our sincere gratitude and thanks for the great work our police and firemen do each day.

Missing Your Bike? We Might Have It! - The Blue Springs Police Department wants residents to know that they are storing a number of bicycles that individuals may have lost or had stolen from them. Residents may request that a search of the Department's database be made for recovered bicycles by contacting the Property and Evidence Unit at 816.228.0239. Police Department staff are requesting you have this important information close-by when making your inquiry or report:

Your Blue Springs Police Department report number (the bicycle must first be reported lost or stolen before it can be researched and recovered)

Serial number of the bicycle, if you have obtained one since filing the report

Proof of ownership (may not be available depending on the age of the bicycle)

         MakeBicycle

         Model

         Color

Any identifying marks (this is extremely important since proof of ownership and serial numbers may not be readily available)
