 Insight Into Blue Springs

Your Personal Leadership Connection

Welcome,

Mayor Steve SteinerWelcome to the final October issue of the Insight Newsletter, your information headquarters for timely and adequate news and information about the current events and developments of Blue Springs. As we come closer to the season of celebration and giving thanks, I can't help but reflect on and become more grateful for the many positive improvements the city has seen in the past year. More importantly, it is with great anticipation that I, like you, continue to look forward to the many significant improvements to come. We are certainly growing today for a brighter, more dynamic future tomorrow.

Community Spotlight

2007 Annual Mayor's Community Prayer Breakfast - This year, the words "giving thanks" will have a very special meaning for the many Vietnam veterans to be honored at the 2007 annual Mayor's Community Prayer Breakfast. The Mayor's Community Prayer Breakfast, held on Friday, November 9, 2007 at 6:30 a.m., is an event sponsored each year by the local Blue Springs chapter of the Christian Business Men's Committee in honor of a number of men and women who have Debbie Riess-Roamserved either their local communities, or on a national frontier, in order to enhance the quality of life for their fellow citizens.

This year, in honor of our Vietnam veterans, the Prayer Breakfast will center on the theme of healing. The event will take place at the Courtyard Marriott Hotel and Conference Center at 1500 NE Coronado Drive, and will feature guest speaker, Debbie Riess-Roam (above) . Ms. Roam will be sharing a testimony of personal healing and Deputy Assistant Secretary of the US Army for Human Resources, Mr. John P. McLaurin Mr. John P. McLaurin, IIIIII (left), will also be addressing our Vietnam Veterans, and assisting me to award each of them a specially-made Mayoral Medal of Valor.

Tickets are $15.00 per person and may be purchased by contacting Mr. Dale Walkup of the Christian Business Men's Committee at 816.589.3975.

Just Add Water Pool Feasiblity Study -

Just add water!

On Tuesday evening, citizens from throughout the Blue Springs area gathered at the Howard B. Brown Public Safety Building to provide their input in the city's 2007 pool feasibility study. The study which is being conducted by the Blue Springs Parks and Recreation Department, is designed to gather information on how residents feel about a number of aquatics facilities issues including:

  • the city's current indoor and outdoor aquatic facilities

  • the opportunity or need to consider possible renovations or the building of new, expanded facilities, and

  • the importance of site location, facility features and program offerings with today's multi-functional aquatic facility

I encourage citizens to join fellow residents in discussing these issues and more at the next public forum event to be held on Tuesday, November 13th from 7-9 p.m. The meeting will be held once again at the Police Department's Public Safety Building at 1100 Smith Street. Guests attending the event will receive a free single-day pool pass and will also be entered into a raffle drawing for a Summer Season Family Pass to be awarded at the end of the study.

Local Family Supports Blue Springs K-9 Unit -

Many of us may have experienced the feelings that come with the loss of a close relative or loved one. It takes a special person or people, however, to turn those Owens' Family Gives Backfeelings into concern and compassion for others, and that's just what members of the Owens' family have done for our Blue Springs Police Department.

On Wednesday October 17th, members of the media and the public were given the opportunity to meet and speak with Mr. Clifford and Mrs. Jackie Owens of Blue Springs, who have made a significant contribution in the amount of $2,000.00 toward the Blue Springs Police Department Owens' Family with K-9 UrichK-9 Unit, in honor of their son. The Owens' family tragically lost their son several years ago after he walked out of his home in Blue Springs and was found approximately one year later deceased. As a result of the incident, Jackie Owens chose to establish a special funds program to help support and expand the Police Department's K-9 Unit. Currently, the Department has one K-9, Urich (pictured below).

I am encouraged and equally touched by the selfless gift of the Owens' family to support Blue Springs K-9 Urichthe public safety of our residents in Blue Springs. Those of you wanting to join the Owens' family by making a contribution to the Owens' K-9 support fund may contact Sergeant Don Rapp of the K-9 Unit at drapp@bluespringsgov.com or by calling 816.228.0150.

Completed Homes Unveiled at Chapman Farms  -  As one of the areas experiencing the greatest change in Blue Springs and Eastern Jackson County, the South Development Area of Blue Springs, specifically the residential land area known as Chapman Farms, is quickly becoming an area of citizen destination. Last Friday, October 19th, several members of City Council, Blue Springs staff, development and business communities attended a private showing of the new homes at Chapman Farms located off of South 7 Highway and SW 2nd Street. The private showing was sponsored by Green Development & Consulting, Inc. who provided guests with an up close and personal tour of the homes, one of which was a 2007 Parade of Homes Contestant.
