 Insight Into Blue Springs

Your Personal Leadership Connection

Greetings!

Hello and Happy Holidays! Welcome to the Insight newsletter, the place for timely City news, and valuable information about happenings in our community. I hope all of you had a joyous Thanksgiving holiday, and like myself, are eagerly anticipating the joys of Christmas, a time spent with family and community friends all around us. This issue, we'll take a closer look at what's happening at this year's annual Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting, recognize the memory and service of a former Council member and finally, highlight some of the special events taking place in Blue Springs this month.

Mayor's Christmas Tree Lighting Event
Mayor's Christmas Tree Each year, this event draws hundreds of children, family and friends to downtown Blue Springs, to share this traditional holiday experience - the lighting of the Mayor's Christmas tree. This year's program will certainly be no exception as families will be entertained by the musical sounds, decorative sights, Christmas tree and fireworks' lights of this festive holiday event.

The annual lighting of the Mayor's Christmas tree in Blue Springs will take place on Tuesday, December 4, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Community members and groups scheduled to be on program include:

  • Pete Grigsby, KMBC Channel 9 Weather Anchorman
  • Donna Best, Blue Springs business Association
  • Members of Blue Springs City Council
  • First Bible Baptist Church Choir
  • Vocal Performances by Merideth Parrish and Jerry Lewis
  • Delta Woos Middle School Show Choir
  • Bravo Performing Arts
  • And of course, the one and only Santa, and Mrs. Claus!

Please join me, members of staff and the many merry faces of our community at this year's annual lighting of the Mayor's Christmas tree. Remember, the lighting ceremony will begin with the countdown to the tree lighting and a holiday fireworks display taking place live on Channel 9, a little after 6:00 p.m. This event is sure to be a very memorable occasion, once again this year. Can't wait to see you there!

Mayor's Medals of Valor Now Available

Mayor's Medal of ValorYou may remember in the last issue of Insight, I shared highlights from the 2007 Annual Mayor's Community Prayer Breakfast in which I awarded our local Veterans with a medal of honor for their service in former fields of battle and the US government armed forces. Those Veterans, or family members of veterans who were not in attendance at the Prayer Breakfast, are now able to request a Medal of Valor. Medals are awarded to both living and fallen Veterans of war. For more information about the Mayor's Medal of Valor, or to request a medal, please contact City Hall at 816.228.0110.

Dedication of Robert Daffer Memorial and Service Plaque

Robert Daffer Memorial and Service PlaqueOn Monday, December 3, members of City Council, staff, former colleagues, family and friends of Robert "Bob" Daffer will gather to dedicate a memorial and service plaque created in honor of the former Councilman.  Councilman Daffer served Blue Springs for a number of years as a member of the City's Planning Commission, and later as a City Council member, a position he held for almost 17 years. The plaque commemorating Bob's years of service will be revealed on Monday at 5:30 p.m. prior to the evening's regular meeting of the City Council. The plaque is scheduled to be installed in its permanent location in City Hall sometime in late December.

EDC Webcam Captures Birds-Eye-View of City Developments

The Economic Development Corporation (EDC) has recently launched its new webcam on the west facing roof of the Blue Springs Marriott Hotel. The webcam was installed to promote and draw visitors to the EDC's website where they can get a closer look at the many positive signs of development progress along Interstate 70 and Adams Dairy Parkway.

EDC Blue Springs Webcam

I encourage you to visit the EDC's website at http://360ideas.com/bluesprings/bluecam.php and try out this new viewing tool. It allows users to control the view they want to see, accessing a number of different angles looking both north and south. So whether you want to see the first building signs of the new Adams Dairy Parkway Landing project, or take a look at who's really on the golf course at Adams Pointe Golf Club during regular business hours, the new webcam will provide you that birds-eye-view!

Community Services League Presents Spirit of Caring Concert

Spirit of Caring ConcertBe sure to bring the family for a night of festive holiday music and warming fellowship with community members and friends at the annual Spirit of Caring Concert. The Concert will be held on Sunday, December 2 at 2:00 p.m. at Blue Springs South High School, 1200 S.E. Adams Dairy Parkway. Community Service League sponsors the Blue Springs Spirit of Caring Concert in order to provide much-needed funding to help those in our community. Funds that are raised are used to support a variety of needs including utility bill assistance, warm clothing, availability of a food pantry, and workforce support for those who need it.  Again, concert admission is $4.00 and tickets will also be sold at the door.

The Santa Train is Coming to Town!
Holiday Express Santa Train

Lastly, on Saturday, December 22 at 4:00, come visit a winter wonderland in Downtown Blue Springs for the Holiday Express Santa Train, presented by Kansas City Southern Railroad. The Holiday Express passes through cities and towns all around the country each year during the Christmas Holiday season. Families making their way downtown will have a chance to board the train to visit Santa Claus, enjoy free hot chocolate and popcorn, and join in plenty of fun activities and "reindeer games"!
