Woods Chapel Road Improvements
Project Update
woodschapelrendering.jpg
One of the most anticipated projects from the 2008 voter approved bond initiative is the Woods Chapel Road improvements. The original plan called for Woods Chapel Road to be improved in three phases. The current plan has consolidated all three phases into one and added an  additional phase, from Briarwood/Castle Drives to Walnut Street, to be completed at a later date.

Consolidating the phases will lessen congestion and inconvenience for commuters and leverage
lower construction costs by bidding the project at one time. Construction phasing will permit Woods Chapel Road to remain open throughout the project.

Construction is in full swing and this project is scheduled to be completed in 2014.  General Contractor Miles Excavating, Inc. has taken advantage of the dry weather and is ahead of schedule with the project.

At the January 22, 2013 City Council Meeting, a brief presentation was given on the status of the project.  To see the presentation, click here.

Please note that the speed limit along Woods Chapel Road has been reduced to 25 miles per hour and that fines will be doubled in the construction zone.  We want to ensure that this project is safe for both motorists and workers.

Phase 2

Phase 1 of the Woods Chapel Road Project has moved forward so quickly that the City Council recently approved an accelerated start date for the second phase of the Woods Chapel Road project.  Phase 2 includes reconstructing Woods Chapel Road from the south end of the current project to Walnut Street.

Improvements include a new rail crossing; softening the curve just south of rail crossing; realignment of the entrance of Lake Tapawingo to align with Mill Drive; and adding a roundabout at the intersection of Walnut Street and Woods Chapel Road.

Phase 2 utility relocation will begin in late spring.   As soon as the utilities are moved, road construction can begin Fall of 2013.  Funding for Phase 2 includes $2.9 million dollars of federal matching funds.

Project History
In 2008, Blue Springs voters overwhelmingly approved two bond issues for street and sewer improvements. Question 2 authorized the issuance of $28 million in general obligation "No Tax Increase" bonds for selected road and intersection improvements, including enhancements along the Woods Chapel Road Corridor in Blue Springs, Missouri.
